Jonestown I concurrently run 2 separate dimensions to my art practice; Jonestown Art and Illustration incorporates the visual tenure of my production, you can see these images by clicking on the 'for the eyes' section, whilst the work I create with a more conceptual element is covered by my full name, Anelise Jones, some of this work can be seen in the section- 'for the mind'.
Jonestown Art and Illustration creates distorted, figurative images with a strong aesthetic of the strange and an exaggerated bizarre reality. The embellishment of this element forms a ‘fairy-talesque’ dimension for these characters to inhabit. The materials I use are traditional, watercolour, pencil and ink and I distort their traditional appearance by abusing their application, allowing the colours to bleed and run naturally to pervade the image with a darkness unique to my manipulation. My ‘girls' visually appear rather macabre, often without eyes, with overstated dark shadows ringing them and saggy, distended bodies. Somehow, I feel they still retain an edge of ‘cuteness’ about them, which is an factor I cultivate, despite their other worldly aesthetic.
My more 'conceptual' practice revolves around the central concept of language and is intended to reach inside to consciousness of the self, to bypass the ego and achieve a discourse with the audience as individuals at a base level of communication.
Words are what we think with and provide the essential pivot of all communication even determining what thoughts it is possible for us to have. A word you read will invade your mind as internal dialogue, taking the same space as private thought; replacing what is intimate and private, substituting it with the thoughts and pen work of another. In this way a stranger can implant their thoughts inside your mind subconsciously. It is my intention to be that stranger.
